And now for something completely different. ;p

We’ve just updated the side with a new page in the ‘Various’ section, featuring Michiro Endo of The Stalin.

“There’s one side to music that makes me the most miserable. One time I went out and bought some meat–remember the band WASP? So they had this performance where they bit into raw meat, to go with the image of the song….

What a fucking pauper!
Are you well?

Mother, I can barely remember your face now.
Since my bout of cystitis, I have found pleasure in cooling that part of myself with water.
I have come to hate baths; my skin will not stop peeling off in large flakes,
and I can’t stand having my subcutaneous fat constantly exposed:
that is why I cried in the purple-red entryway, all alone.
Mother, I want to taste anpan one last time.
Mother, I want to taste the kuri kinton you used to make for me during the New Year.
Mother, I would love to eat some sukiyaki stuffed with pork and full of sugar.
Mother, my tastes are a disgrace to the ordinary person.
Mother, my diarrhea hasn’t stopped since this morning.
Mother, I must have ruptured a blood vessel.
Mother, it won’t stop bleeding, it will not stop.
Mother, Mother, I hate the color red!

Notes: I tried to keep the format as close to the original as I could but I’m iffy as hell about some parts. Not adding notes either since anything I’d write would be incomplete at best.

(1)
It’s a trick from the Russian Sambo martial arts
That will leave you with only three years to live!
No time even to dance the Polka
Ivan had the trick pulled on him
And to himself he muttered farewell
Since then the seasons have turned
And sure enough, yesterday the third year came

Be it in happiness or in torment
The third year’s days will go by
And it’s the former that Ivan chose

Ivan the Fool!

Since learning he had little time left
Ivan had lived in depravity
For a cheap price
He took in destitute children one by one
Gradually a procession of children formed
With Ivan at the head
On they walk, straight ahead
The Trans-Siberian Railroad runs straight ahead too

They crossed the plains and headed for an ocean of trees
A great forest beneath the tundra’s midnight sun
Ivan taught the children
About this world’s hidden side

Ivan the Fool!

Having learned of the world’s hidden side, the children
despaired of the world
They drank poison and died one by one
Except for Ivan who couldn’t die
Though he knew his time was near, Ivan could not die
Again he’s Ivan the Fool! The Fool!

As Ivan buries the children
In the tundra soil
Their corpses are
Staring at him coldly

“The tundra colors are beautiful”
Says Ivan

Ivan the Fool!

Notes:
1. The ‘sannen goroshi’ or ‘three-year death’, is a martial arts myth according to which you can strike your opponent in such a way that he will die exactly three years from the day he was struck. Just Like a Boy
Just Like a Boy
I’ll go out into town just like a boy

This road runs on and on, endlessly straight ahead
Somewhere far beyond it is Paradise
I cannot wait to see what it is you have found
Your words are shining so bright
And I feel a touch envious, but today as well is a beautiful day!

Oh! Just Like a Boy
Just Like a Boy
I’ll go out into town just like a boy

Notes:
1. The verb used is 駆けずり回る. It means to rush or run around, however the emphasis seems to be on the fact that you’re making great efforts to achieve a goal, even if it means going to a million places or doing a million things. (With another possible definition being to frolic, to gambol.)
I chose to translate it as ‘chasing your dreams’ since to me that fits the lyrics best, especially since the song seems to be about emigration.

Japanese lyrics are here: http://www.uta-net.com/song/105833/

On Japanese music and translation

This is something I’ve been mulling over more and more often during my language studies. It’s by no means general - it probably applies best to me and those with more or less a similar level of knowledge.

How accurate can my translations be?

The first hurdle is the most obvious: the mentality of language. Fully grasping the mentality of Japanese is extremely difficult, especially for a person like me who has never lived in Japan. I find even after years of study, some concepts are simply too alien to my way of thinking to be easily understood.
I’m talking about cases when the dictionary definition of a word/expression has nothing to do with how that word is actually used. About cases when a word I might find positive or hopeful is actually perceived as negative or sad. About social concepts (take tatemae and honne, though that’s a cheap example) without which you will lose the entire meaning of the text you’re trying to translate.

Now add to this the fact that the people whose works I’m trying to translate are “rebels”. By some in Japan they’re seen as not having a Japanese mentality at all. They certainly don’t always think in stereotypical ways.
How does that reflect in the way they speak and write? How much of their culture’s mentality is ingrained in the language they use? For the lack of a better word, how Japanese are they even when trying to be different or edgy?

How can I, someone who is still struggling to grasp it all, translate them accurately? When often one sentence will be direct and another dripping with hidden meaning?

I worry about this the more I look at Michiro Endo’s lyrics; I can’t help but wonder what am I missing, what emotions or impressions does a Japanese person get from his lyrics that I do not? Ultimately, how qualified am I to translate this type of text?

Plastic Tree are my guilty little pleasure. :)

Coward! You breed schizophrenia
Coward! Coward! On a fair night you start to howl (2)

When those damned politicians start to sing
Cursed capitalists burst into laughter
And the magistrates start to rage
They’ll be forever wretched!

Coward! Coward! There is nothing you believe in
Coward! Coward! It’s enough your feelings get hurt and you’re incompetent

You’re the outsider when you crash in uninvited
A blind sheep nodding along
Surely someday you’ll turn out to be a bakeneko (3)
You’ll be forever a fool

Coward! Coward! You’re obscene down to the core
Coward! Coward! Hoarding your semen and nothing more

When those damned politicians start to sing
Cursed capitalists burst into laughter
And the magistrates start to rage
They’ll be forever wretched!

Notes:
These lyrics were taken from STOP JAP NAKED.
1. The literal translation of 「負け犬」 (makeinu) is “losing dog”. A makeinu is someone whose entire existence is based on servitude and submission to those he considers his superiors. He will never “bare his fangs” at a superior adversary, preferring instead to give up and run before the start of the fight. His cowardice and submission seem to be the two defining traits - that is why I translated it as ‘coward’ rather than ‘loser’.
I have also seen makeinu translated as ‘underdog’ but unlike an underdog, makeinu is not seen in a positive light.
2. This line is a twist on the expression 「（負け）犬の遠吠え」, “(make)inu no tooboe”. The distant howl of a makeinu. It’s a three part saying. First, a weak dog will always wait to be in a safe place before howling with all of his might. Second, a coward will be full of swagger behind other people’s backs, and will stab them in the back rather than confront them directly. It’s also an expression ridiculing the swagger, excuses and unwillingness to admit defeat of one who finds himself in a losing position.
3. Have a peek at the Wikipedia page for some quick information on the bakeneko.

If anyone wants, lyrics to the STOP JAP version are here: http://www.uta-net.com/song/105834/

先天性労働者＝ＯＨ！マルクスHereditary Labourer = Oh! The lines in parentheses aren’t part of the Japanese lyrics but in my opinion had to be kept to preserve the meaning of the quotes.
I would like to quote a footnote from the English translation that I used: “The famous final phrase of the Manifesto, “Working Men of All Countries, Unite!”, in the original German is: “Proletarier aller Länder, vereinigt euch!” Thus, a more correct translation would be “Proletarians of all countries, Unite!”
The last two lines of the song, 「万国のプロレタリアート　団結せよ」, are a word for word translation of the German phrase and thus more accurate than the English “Working men of all countries, unite!”

I used the following English version of the Communist Manifesto: http://www.marxists.org/archive/marx/works/1848/communist-manifesto/index.htm

I couldn’t find the exact Japanese translation Endo used, but here are two Japanese versions for the curious:
http://redmole.m78.com/bunko/kisobunken/sengen1.html
http://page.freett.com/rionag/marx/mcp.html

The song 「お母さんいい加減―先天性労働者」 is another version of Oh Marx! with the order of the lyrics reshuffled and minus (most of) Endo’s original lines.

KalavinkaLyrics by Suganami EijunPerformed by The Back HornTranslation by KlaraDance in the rain,...

Kalavinka
Lyrics by Suganami Eijun
Performed by The Back Horn
Translation by Klara

Dance in the rain, Kalavinka
Dance gaily, Kalavinka

With truth in your hand and reality in your eyes
Dance in the rain, Kalavinka

There are mountains of hidden treasures, flowers in beautiful bloom
Now share a drink from the sacred chalice and exhale purple smoke

Dance in memory of death, Kalavinka
Dance gaily, Kalavinka

With truth in your hand and reality in your eyes
Dance in memory of death, Kalavinka

A vibrant mandala; the darkness of reality deepens into a void
As darma tumbles down the eternal helix of karma

Under a swirling gilded sky, fate is etched into your palm
Arcadia dyed pink by a swirl of exhaled smoke

Following the light towards the peak where life blooms
The map of your soul unfolds, guided by the light

Under a swirling gilded sky, fate is etched into your palm
Arcadia dyed pink by a swirl of exhaled smoke
